The Hard Drive Recovery Process

The data recovery process is a lot less complicated than many people might think. The Hard Drive Recovery Group has honed its process so that the most complicated part of it for you is simply putting your drive in an envelope, and shipping it. After that, all the work is on us.

Here’s how it works:

For most clients, the easiest way to take control of their data loss situation is simply to call us on our toll free number above. Our data recovery technicians will let you know right away whether your drive has experienced a failure situation, and if not, can recommend how to get your data back without sending it to us. This is simply a side effect of the fact that not all “apparent failures” are ACTUAL failures.

In fact, 1 out of every 8 drives we consult on never need to be shipped.

But If Your Drive DOES Require In Shop Recovery?

If after hearing your drive’s symptoms we determine that it will need in-shop recovery, we provide you with packaging instructions, and a suggested shipping method. Then, once we receive your drive, device or laptop, we log it into our system for complete hard drive recovery (keeping in mind your specific recovery demands).

During this process, we keep you well informed of what is happening with your drive, and let you know immediately if there is an unexpected issue. Nine times out of 10, however, our original phone evaluation can pick out all of your issues.

Recovering Your Data
Once we have consulted with you, we first clone your media, and begin working with the clone instead of your actual drive. This way, you can be assured that your original data will remain intact, and that if there happens to be an issue during recovery, we can simply go back and create a new clone.

This is a standard industry process for clean room data recovery.

From there, we recover your data on a sector-by-sector basis with the cloned data. If your data is particularly critical, we recommend you request our expedited data recovery service, which will greatly quicken the entire process.

Here’s a video showing how the process basically works:

Data Security
Keeping your data absolutely secure is our top priority, and a major responsibility for any recovery shop. If you would like to request it, we can sign a non-disclosure agreement, but we can assure you that your data will never be viewed by our technicians. Your files recovered, yes, but your privacy remains.

Returning Your Critical Data To You
Because hard drives are so cheap nowadays, we will typically put your data on a new drive as part of our service, and ship it to you. We typically keep old client drives for parts, but if you would specifically like your drive back, we can also arrange that.

In the interest of high-speed, we can also upload your data to a secure server for download. Your best bet is to discuss any specific data delivery needs with your technician. We are extremely flexible when it comes to getting you your data in the most convenient way possible.

Safeguarding Your Files
As a good safeguard, we retain your recovered files for 30 days after initial recovery. This is for safety only, and after that 30 day period we electronically shred every data file we recover. This is to ensure that if you have any issues for a month after your recovery, you know you have a copy available to you that is just a phone call away.
